Transforming Desire into Reality
We all know that having “good intentions” is only
the first step toward achieving our goals. All too often the
results fall short of our desires because we choose the wrong
path toward achieving the goals. This can also be true with
an exercise program. Our body needs the proper vehicle on
its journey to total fitness.
It Takes Brains to Build a Better Body
Many are lead to believe that just by participating in an
activity that involves movement, using a specific piece of
exercise equipment, utilizing a unique training method or
becoming involved with a new type of exercise class, significant
fitness improvements will automatically occur. This misguided
approach can often lead to poor results, over-training, injuries
and frustration. In addition, many people do not know which
direction to turn to avoid running into these obstacles.
Why are so many people not reaping the full benefits that
exercise has to offer? Could it be that we are not being correctly
informed about what constitutes a result-producing exercise
program? If you had a choice, which vehicle would you like
to own – a Yugo or a Mercedes? This question has an
obvious answer for most of us. However, many are involved
in an exercise program that actually represents a Yugo and
are told that it will produce the benefits of a Mercedes.
The most important question to ask yourself before beginning
an exercise program is, “What does my body require to
maximally improve its physical capacity and appearance?”
The answer to this question leads us to the real objective
of an exercise program.
Real Objective –Vs.- Assumed Objective
Most people assume that the main objective of an exercise
program is to discover how much weight they can lift; how
far or fast they can walk, run or swim; and how long they
can keep their heart beating within the “target heart
rate” zone. However, the real objective is to correctly
utilize the tools of your exercise program (equipment, training
method, techniques and the amount of effort and concentration,
etc.) to provide the greatest stimulus to the muscular system.
The greater the stimulus, the better the results. Why should
the emphasis be on the muscular system? The muscular system
is the only part of the body directly affected by exercise.
It is the one system whose improvement will affect all other
aspects of body form and function.
Maximizing Your Exercise Results
Including the following variables within your exercise
regimen can maximize your fitness results: one-on-one instruction,
effective training methods, discipline to maintain correct
form and technique and a solid performance effort. On the
other hand, these variables have little value if they are
not utilized on a consistent basis. Exercise is hard work
– ask anyone who has ever achieved significant results
from an exercise program (or achieved anything worthwhile).
You cannot expect significant fitness results until you find
the proper exercise vehicle. Since your muscles are the engines
to the body, it is appropriate to discover a vehicle that
works your muscles most effectively. Therefore – Start
Your Engines!
